Almost one month has passed the BJP-PDP govt had claimed on the floor of the state Assembly that the state govt after examining the report of the Justice (Retd) RC Gandhi commission on Kishtwar riots would take appropriate action against all those high profile politicians, senior police and civic officers indicted in the report.
Senior PDP ministers including Parliamentary and Law Affairs Minister Basharat Ahmad Bukhari and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar made separate statements while clarifying the stand of the state govt on the sensitive subject. They both confirmed the fact on the floor of both the lower and upper houses that the govt has received the report and would be examining the same before taking any action against those held responsible.
Now more than one month after the revelations came to light in the form of media reports the state govt headed by Mufti Mohd Sayeed has not made public either the excerpts of the final report or initiated any action against the culprits as per the recommendations of the one man commission report.
Sajjad Kitchloo’s name had surfaced during Kishtwar riots. Three people were killed and over 40 others were injured in the day-long incidents of violence and looting in the area after the Eid prayers on August 9, 2013. Kitchloo, was later given clean chit by the same commission in its preliminary report on December 20, 2013 following which he was reinducted in the Council of Ministers by Omar Abdullah.
In its 160-page interim report former Deputy Commissioner, SP, Duty magistrates of violence-hit areas and other lower rank officers were held responsible for not being present on ground which led to spread of violence.
Interestingly, despite series of media expose on the contents of the report the state govt spokesman is yet to deny the contents of the report or take legal action against any media house for publishing excerpts of the final report.
Smelling foul play National Conference leadership had defended their party MLC Sajjad Kitchloo alleging after the formation of the govt the course of inquiry commission took a sudden u-turn. Senior party MLA and Provincial President DS Rana alleged if NC MLC Sajjad Kitchloo has been indicted by the commission it raises big question marks on the credibility of the commission. He said the same commission had earlier exonerated him in its preliminary report. Either of the reports were politically motivated, he added.
