Pro-Pakistan leaders detained ahead of Geelani’s rally

Several separatist leaders were allegedly detained ahead of hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s planned rally coinciding with that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 7. The moderate faction of Hurriyat, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Sunday extended its support to Geelani’s rally. JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, Democratic Freedom Party chief Shabir Ahmad Shah and several second rung separatist leaders were detained late last night and early today by police, their aides claimed. “Malik and three other JKLF leaders were detained last evening and lodged at police station Kothibagh,” a JKLF spokesperson told PTI. Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today criticised the security forces over the alleged incident of firing of tear gas shells inside a mosque in Srinagar during a protest. “I am pained to read that teargas shells have been directly fired inside the grand mosque (Jamia Masjid) of Kashmir,” he said. Chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, yesterday claimed that police fired tear smoke shells inside Jamia Masjid (grand mosque) during protests after Friday prayers in Nowhatta area in Srinagar. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Monday chaired a meeting of senior officers, ministers at civil secretariat complex under the cover of darkness. As the dewatering work is still going on inside the complex the power lines could not be restored even on Monday. The govt had earlier announced to throw open the secretariat on September 18 but due to water logging on the first floor the state govt employees could not reach their offices. Even though the local court on saturday issued an arrest warrant against former minister of State for Health Shabir Ahmad Khan in connection with a sexual assault case the state police force remained clueless about his exact  whereabouts and failed to arrest him till late evening. The State Level Steering Committee (SLSC) today decided to submit five mega projects costing about Rs. 600 Cr. to the Union Ministry of Urban Development for funding in order to improve solid waste management in twin capital cities of the state. The projects also include Preservation and Development of River Jehlum from Dobji Ghat Gowkadal to Chattabal (Cement Bridge) and Decongestion/ Redevelopment of inner old city areas.
