17 killed, 34 injured as bus rolled down into a gorge in Digdol, Ramban

17 people were killed and 34 others injured when a passenger bus rolled down into a 400-feet deep gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district in the wee hours today. The bus, which was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu, skidded off the road and rolled down into the gorge in Digdol  area around 0230 hours due to alleged negligence of the driver, police said. 17 people, including six women and a child were killed, and 34 others injured, 17 of them seriously in the mishap, they said. While terming the reports of Quran desecration in Gool area of Ramban as baseless, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday said the local cleric had provoked local residents against the BSF which lead to the death of four protesters in the BSF firing. “Who provoked people in Ramban has to be seen. Molvi spread rumours that Holy Quran has been desecrated which were baseless. It was that Molvi who provoked people against BSF. Where are the Non-Lethal weapons of J&K police?

Not very long ago the Jammu and Kashmir police had equipped itself with non-lethal weapons and ammunition to deal with  the violent  mobs. But on Thursday when J&K police arrived at the scene of action in Gool  area of Ramban district the majority of policemen were not armed with non-lethal weapons and had no other option but to fall back upon their traditional weapons to contain the law and order situation as it fast slipped out of their hands.
