On his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir as Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley today discussed the security scenario in the state in separate meetings with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and top army officials. Jaitley, who is accompanied by Army Chief General Bikram Singh, was briefed by local Army officers about the security situation along the Line of Control and the counter-insurgency operations in the hinterland. “The Defence Minister visited Headquarters of Chinar Corps where he was given a comprehensive briefing on overall security situation in the Kashmir Valley including the counter-infiltration grid along the LoC and counter-terrorism grid in the hinterland,” a defence spokesman said. Omar visits Pahalgam, takes stock of fire incident

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah this morning visited Pahalgam to receive first hand appraisal of the fire incident that gutted Tourist Reception Centre and some private property including shops and a hotel. The Chief Minister interacted with the fire sufferers and expressed his solidarity and sympathy to them. He told them that all possible help will be provided to them for their rehabilitation. He also talked to the officers of Tourism Department and received brief about the gutted Tourist Reception Centre. Two days ago J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was eagerly awaiting an invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi. He even wrote on twitter that he is yet to receive an invitation. On Saturday Omar was upbeat. Reason he had not one but two invitations in his pocket. Speaking to media in Srinagar Omar said, “Yes, I have received two invitations from both President Pranab Mukherjee and letter from Narendra Modi. I will be attending the ceremony on Monday”. J&K govt. approves 7 new private B Ed colleges in Kashmir

The Government today approved setting up of 7 new private B Ed colleges in the State among a slew of other decisions. The State Cabinet, which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, approved opening up of seven new private B Ed colleges as recommended by the University of Kashmir, an official spokesman said. He said the new colleges will entail a corresponding reduction in the overall intake capacity of B Ed seats in Kashmir division. The Cabinet also approved adoption of Defined Pension Rules in respect of the employees of SKICC authorising the Director SKICC to sanction pensions and other retirement benefits to the eligible employees of the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC).
