When School children waited for over 5 hours for VVIPs to formally inaugurate the Navratra festival in Katra

Dressed in colourful attire, faces decked up with contrasting make up, standing on their legs large number of children, hungry and thirsty, waited for almost five long hours  for the VVIPs including Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and Tourism Minister GA Mir to arrive in Katra to inaugurate the nine day long Navratra festival. On the invitation cards the organisers of the festival had mentioned 11.00 a.m as the time of inauguration but on saturday the chief guest and other dignitaries arrived well past 3.00 p.m to cut the customary ribbon before formally  inaugurating the festival. Amid escalating tensions along LoC, Pak Wrestlers not invited to play Kushti in Katra

The ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan has  led to the ouster of the Pakistan wrestling team from the famous wrestling competition held every year during the Navratra festival in Katra.  The President of the Indian Style Wrestling Association (J&K ) Shiv Kumar Sharma Thursday told reporters that in view of the tension along the LOC in J&K the association decided against inviting team from Pakistan to participate in the Kushti Maha Kumbh scheduled to begin on October 11 in Katra. Security forces geared up to ensure incident free Navratra festival

It is awful to see the garbage and polyethene spread all over the town and Rains have made the condition worse. Seeing the insensitive attitude of attitude Katra residents are asking “What is the Katra Municipal Committee doing ?” A fight for right to clean the city is needed here ! You can easily notice huge heaps of polyethenes(though there is a ‘strict’ ban on polyethene bags in J&K) and garbage in the main areas like Main Bus Stand, Main market, Ban Ganga Road ( Holy Ban Ganga is also  polluted with plastic and garbage), Counter number two. With  thousands of pilgrims flocking Katra base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine  during Navratra festival the horse capital of this  holy township is brimming with activity.   Every where you see colourful horse heads decorated with flowers and musical brass bells greet you as you begin an uphill climb.   For ‘ponny wallahs’ who own these horses it is just  the beginning of a long summer season ahead as large rush of pilgrims have started trooping in the Katra township.   The economy of the region is totally dependent on the flow of visitors/pilgrims during the peak season.Last year more than 1 crore pilgrims performed darshan inside the holy cave giving a fillip to the local economy.   As …

Jammu, Katra get 4 new trains

In a slew of major initiatives for Jammu and Kashmir, Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today announced four new trains for Jammu including two for Katra, the base camp of holy Mata Vaishno Devi ji shrine, where the train was expected to reach in next few months, extended route of one train and increased frequency of another. He also proposed electrification of railway tracks in Jammu and said he would pursue for more routes in Jammu and Kashmir including Bilaspur-Manali-Leh and Jammu-Poonch via Akhnoor.
