Pitching for green power, the Railways have set up 1 megawatt solar power plant at Katra station, a move that can save up to ₹ 1 crore annually on energy bills and also significant reduction of carbon dioxide at rail premises. In keeping with the motto of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ for sustainable development and as a significant way to thwart climate change impact, we have been undertaking several green initiatives including the installation of the 1 megawatt solar power plant at Katra station, said a senior Northern Railway official. Over 1 lakh pilgrims visit Vaishnodevi during Navratras

Over one lakh pilgrims have visited Katra and paid obeisance at the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi during the ongoing festival of navratras. Around 1,05,801 pilgrims visited the Katra and paid obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine during the Navratras, Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) officials said. On the fourth day of the Navratra festival 2015 yesterday, about 28,838 yatris visited Katra and paid obeisance at the Shrine, according to the Yatra registration counter (YRC) Katra, the officials said. Around 14,000 more pilgrims paid reverence on the third day of the Navratras at the pilgrimage. Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday said there is no proposal to exempt the helicopter service from Katra to Vaishno Devi shrine, from the service tax imposed on commercial chopper services in the state. “At the moment there is no proposal for exemption with the government,” Finance Minister Haseeb A Drabu said in a written reply to a question in the state Assembly. National Conference MLA from Nagrota Devender Rana had asked if the state government intended to exempt the helicopter services to the revered shrines in Reasi district of the state from the 12.5% service tax imposed on commercial helicopter services. Indian railways to run a bi-weekly train for Katra from Kalka from June 2

Catering to the growing demand of pilgrims travelling to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, railways will run a new bi-weekly train for Katra from Kalka from June 2. The inaugural run of Kalka-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra train will be from Kalka at 1.40 PM today and from Katra at 9.30 PM tomorrow, said a senior Northern Railway official. The new train will have AC2, AC3, Sleeper and general second class accommodation. Regular run of the train will start from June 2 from Kalka and June 3 from Katra. The train will depart from Kalka at 7 PM on every Tuesday and Friday to arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station at 4.45 AM the next day. …

Why Railway Engineers permitted Shri Shakti Express to run on track minus Banker Engine on hilly track?

Despite according top priority to the newly launched rail link to Katra  it appears the field engineers remained casual when it came to addressing the basic requirements of a VIP train ferrying pilgrims to the base camp of holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. On Wednesday when Shri Shakti Express was stuck inside tunnel no 27  the railway engineers realised their folly of not attaching a ‘banker’ engine to power the fully AC train on the hilly track. Train to Katra: Railways start losing revenue from Day one

The train services to Katra were launched with much fanfare on Friday but in the last three days not even once the ticket collectors have bothered to check the railway tickets of passengers traveling in large numbers from Jammu. Unlike all other trains the DMU coaches traveling on the route have not been provided with adequate staff to listen to the grievances of the passengers and even to check their tickets. Interestingly, no Ticket checker has been seen spotted standing at the exit gates of the Katra railway station or at Jammu railway station  who can check the valid tickets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Udhampur-Katra rail link by flagging of the Vaishno Devi Express. The 25 km stretch from Udhapmur to Katra has cost Rs 1100 crore and has taken nearly 12 years to be made. The train will pass through 10 tunnels covering a distance of 10.9 km. All tunnels are illuminated and the longer tunnels have been provided state of art ventilation and systems for safety and rescue. The tunnel number 23 is the longest on the section having a length of 3.120 km.
