Jammu native Justice Tirath Singh Thakur sworn in as 43rd Chief Justice of India

Justice Tirath Singh Thakur was on Thursday sworn in as 43rd Chief Justice of India by President Pranab Mukherjee at an elegant function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The senior-most judge of the apex court, 63-year old Justice Thakur took over from incumbent Justice H L Dattu who retired on Wednesday. As a Supreme Court judge, he headed the bench which had delivered the verdict to reform cricket controlling body BCCI in the wake of allegations of betting and spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League. Justice Thakur also headed the bench which ordered probe into the multi-crore chit fund scam in eastern India, also known as Saradha scam. With the US distancing itself on Kashmir issue, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the absence of a third party does not absolve India of its responsibility to find a solution to the problem. “The absence of 3rd party intervention doesn’t absolve India of its responsibility to find a solution…,” Mr Abdullah wrote on social networking site Twitter, referring to US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby’s statement on the issue today. Authorities advised villagers living along the Indo-Pak border in Samba to remain vigilant


With Pakistani troops repeatedly shelling border areas, authorities have advised villagers living along the Indo-Pak border in Samba district to remain vigilant and stay indoors. “People (of border hamlets along International Border) should remain vigilant. Villagers are advised to stay indoors and at safer places during cross border shelling”, minister for industries and commerce, Chander Prakash Ganga said. Ganga visited villages of Samba district which were hit by cross border firing and assessed damages due to mortar shelling in Mawa and Bainglarg villages in Samba district on Saturday. Pakistan PM to raise Kashmir with Obama

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will raise the Kashmir issue with US President Barack Obama when he meets him on Thursday, its envoy told separatist Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq. “I was told by the Pakistan High Commissioner that the Pakistan Prime Minister would be raking up the Kashmir issue with Obama (on October 22) during his visit to the US,” said the Mirwaiz who had an hour-long meeting with the envoy Abdul Basit here yesterday. Pakistan has again raked up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the UN, telling a global conference of parliamentarians here that it is time for a plebiscite under the world body for the Kashmiri people. “Outstanding disputes continue to fester in the region preventing it from realising its tremendous economic and social potential. Pakistan violated ceasefire 192 times along the International Border(IB) in Jammu and Kashmir till July 26 this year, government told Lok Sabha today, adding that measures have been put in place for “immediate and effective retaliation” to such provocations. The House was also informed that the Centre proposes to have a provision for giving Rs 5 lakh compensation, in addition to what the state government pays, to the families of those who get killed in firing from across the border.
