‘Earthquake Tourism’ is fine but what happened to the distribution of relief material to the needy and poor in Doda

Between May 1 and June 9 a large army of political leaders from both the centre and the state have visited the quake hit areas of erstwhile Doda district but till date the poor and the needy survivors are waiting for the distribution of relief material. An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted the Doda region in  which 3 people were killed, over 70 were injured  and at least over 70,000 structures including large number of govt school buildings and health centres suffered damages. Ironically, till date the state and the centre govt have failed to reach out to the people on ground zero. National Conference does some Straight Talking

Repeated claims made by the Congress MLA GM Saroori with regard to central assistance for quake affected people in Doda region has not gone down well with the National Conference leadership. Majority of party leaders including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has not relished the idea of speaking out of turn and creating confusion in the minds of affected people for certain vested interests. Politics of Relief package for Quake hit Districts grips J&K Govt

After series of aftershocks rocked quake hit hilly Doda and Kishtwar districts now politics of distributing relief material and sanctioning aid for the affected people has taken centre stage adding to the miseries of affected people. Interestingly, the Congress party which is running an alliance government with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir  is at the forefront of organising relief for the quake hit population in the region. Omar yet to hold monthly Cabinet meeting in any Remote District of Jammu Division

Ten months ago Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had proudly announced on the micro blogging site that he will take his cabinet to Tangdhar in North Kashmir. “This week I take the Cabinet to Tangdar in North Kashmir. Once a month we will meet in a remote part of the state. Gurez, Machil and Keran”,Omar had twitted on May 26,2012.
