Army agrees to vacate some land near Jammu airport

Army today agreed to vacate some land near the airport and the University in Jammu while several joint committees have been formed to address other issues regarding transfer of land held by Army to the civil administration at various places in the State. The Army was also requested to secure areas having landmines, in particular those which are adjacent to the farm or fields of the local inhabitants, along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region, an official spokesman. Army roping in locals in Jammu & Kashmir border areas for intelligence

Army is seeking to rope in locals for boosting intelligence in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir against the backdrop of a number of attacks carried out by terrorists after infiltrating from Pakistan. This comes weeks after locals in Udhampur caught alive a Pakistani terrorist who was on the run after carrying out a strike, along with an associate, on a BSF bus. Lieutenant General, Narinder Pal Singh Hira, on Tuesday has taken over as the Chief of Staff of Headquarter Northern Command, a defence spokesman said. Commissioned into Sikh Light Infantry in 1978, the General Officer has a vast experience in Western and Eastern Theatre and also in counter insurgency operations both in Jammu and Kashmir and North East, he said. Spurt in number of youths joining militancy in Kashmir: Army

Army today said there has been a spurt in the number of youths taking to the path of militancy in Kashmir valley over the last two years. “The figure (of local youth joining militancy) is little over 40, same as the last year. “But it is definitely more than 2013 and 2012… Yes, to that extent there is an increase and it is something of concern for all the agencies here,” General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha told reporters at a function here. Five hurt in clashes at Army recruitment rally in Reasi

Five people including a policeman and a woman were injured in clashes during an Army recruitment rally in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Monday. The chaos broke out during the Territorial Army recruitment rally at Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) in Talwara belt of Reasi district as aspirants rushed towards the entrance in large numbers while those rejected started pushing each other on the way out, police said. Police resorted to mild cane charge as the crowd clashed with them in which five persons including a cop and a woman suffered minor injuries, they said, adding that the situation was brought under control and the screening of aspirants is underway. The Jammu and Kashmir government has not extended the lease of Kalith firing range in Jammu, biggest in the state, leading to halt in firing practices by jawans here, army officials said. “There is no firing practice taking place in Kalith firing range after the expiry of the lease in June 2014. There is no training of jawans taking place since then”, Brigade Commander of 52 Infantry Brigade, Brig R S Bhadauria told reporters here. A befitting tribute was paid to martyr Lance Naik V Anthony Nirmal Viji of Artillery Regiment, in a wreath laying ceremony conducted as per the highest traditions of Indian Army, at Pathankot Air Field. The wreath laying ceremony was attended by Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, General Officer Commanding, Rising Star Corps and other military officials. The mortal remains of Lance Naik Anthony were flown to his native place Mugiyur in Vellupuram Distt of Tamil Nadu in an IAF aircraft. Lance Naik Anthony was martyred while fighting bravely against the terrorists, who had attacked the Army Camp at Janglot, on Friday. All the three terrorists were killed in the joint Army and Police operation.Two civilians were also killed in militants attack.
