Rahul had no words for friend Omar’s favorite chant on AFSPA

They wore the same colours up their sleeves. They share the same smiles looking at each other. They were in good mood and the weather gods were smiling too.

CM Omar with Rahul gandhi

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had not asked for anything more to impress his close friend and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

The duo got enough time between themselves to share their view  points on variety of subjects concerning the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

They chatted, they shared notes, whispered in to each others ears and must have shared a joke or two. But after the formal function at Budgam was over and the formalities were done away with   came the turn of  partially restricted media interaction.

It is here the scion of Gandhi family, on whose shoulders rest a great responsibility of steering the Congress party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, failed his host and large poulation whom he called his own people during his previous visit.

Instead of taking a stand on the contentious issue of partial revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from peaceful districts of the state Rahul Gandhi chose to duck the media googly and stumped Omar Abdullah by avoiding to speak  in clear words. He chose to react in a very diplomatic manner instead of speaking his heart out  for the sake of Kashmiri population. When he was faced with the question on revocation of AFSPA Rahul played safe and said the issue of revocation of the controversial act is between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Chief Minister.

“It is a discussion between the Chief minister and the Prime Minister. It is not appropriate for me to make a statement,”Rahul said in the company of Omar who has been pitching for revoking Armed Forces Special Powers Act from certain areas of the state where Army does not operate.
However, his efforts have so far met stiff resistance from the Army. Rahul’s response must have surprised Omar Abdullah as well especially when he was going around the town claiming that even PCC Chief Prof Saif Ud Din Soz is making favourable statements on the issue of AFSPA and the discussions with the centre are going on.  Recently, Omar had maintained that he was not able to convince the Union Defence and Home Minister over the need to revoke the AFSPA in a phased manner.
