After series of aftershocks rocked quake hit hilly Doda and Kishtwar districts now politics of distributing relief material and sanctioning aid for the affected people has taken centre stage adding to the miseries of affected people.
Interestingly, the Congress party which is running an alliance government with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir is at the forefront of organising relief for the quake hit population in the region.
Despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s visit to the quake hit areas and announcement of release of 25 crore from SDRF fund for quake hit region Union Health Minister Ghualm Nabi Azad had to personally step in to gear up the state machinery.
He pitched his tents in the area and took stock of the damages across the region along with high level teams of National Disaster Management Authority. After making a fair assessment of the total damages he briefed the centre and sought adequate compensation for the quake hit population. Due to his lone efforts the centre is learnt to have sanctioned 334 crore financial assistance for the quake hit districts of the state.
It is here Congressmen led by Union Health Minister scored over their alliance partners and were able to send across a message to the population that on one hand the state government failed to come to their rescue when they needed them the most and on the other hand Ghulam Nabi Azad was able to galvanise the state machinery and kick started immediate distribution of tents and other relief material .
Congressmen even made public that Central government has announced a financial relief of 334 crores for the quake-hit areas in Doda and Kishtwar.
“A financial assistance of 334 crores has been sanctioned by centre for the earthquake victims here,” said G N Saroori.
Sensing the mood of the angry people on ground zero against lack of coordinated efforts image doctors of Chief Minister have now embarked on damage control exercise and rushed team of National Conference to the area to coordinate relief measures. At the same time reports have now surfaced in the media that Chief Minister is going to seek special package on the pattern of Leh for quake hit Doda and Kishtwar districts and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh shortly.
Official sources also claimed that till date the centre has not sanctioned any relief money for the quake hit districts.Only an impression has been cultivated among the people that Ghulam Nabi Azad had played a key role in getting approval for the quake hit districts. The Chief Minister is scheduled to meet PM in Delhi and discuss the modalities of the relief package to the tune of Rs 400-450 crore, official sources said.
