movies-ang-lee-life-of-pi-oscar‘Life of Pi’ is a movie based on a book by a Canadian author and directed by a Taiwanese American. The film won four awards — the maximum by a film this year — including Best Director for Ang Lee.

It was a big moment for Lee, but a bigger moment for his Indian fans when he ended his acceptance speech with a “Namaste”.

‘Life of Pi’ narrates the journey of an Indian boy who survives a storm. Widely shot in India, the fantasy adventure drama stars young Delhi-based Suraj Sharma in the lead role, with acclaimed actors Irrfan and Tabu in prominent roles in the movie — a big screen adaptation of Yann Martel’s eponymous Man Booker Prize-winning novel.

During his acceptance speech, Lee thanked his producers, “Indian crew”, Suraj and all technicians. “Suraj, where are you,” he called out, and the cameras focussed on Suraj, who made his acting debut with the movie. And finally Lee wrapped up the speech saying: “namaste”.
