On Jan 26, 1950 the Constitution of India, drafted by BR Ambedkar, came in to force. Ironically, to add color to the festivities surrounding 65th Republic Day celebrations here in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir the legs of the statue of BR Ambedkar, Chief Architect of the India constitution, were tied up with the buntings at Ambedkar chowk.
The insensitive approach of the workforce and those who directed them to put up buntings on the occasion of January 26 not only showed disrespect to the legal luminary par excellence but has also hurt the sentiments of his followers and general public at large.
The buntings which were tied up on the eve of the Republic Day continue to hold the statue at the bust Ambedkar Chowk crossing but no state govt functionary, police officer or any other local political activist/social worker has raised their voice against the insensitive approach.
The statute of BR Ambedkar is not the only exception.Several other statues of visionary leaders of the state and stalwarts have met with the same fate. The statue of GL Dogra, General Zorawar Singh Jamwal too have been tied up with buntings to mark the occasion.
