Govt. focuses on snow clearing operations in Kashmir, Residents miseries compound in Snowbound areas of Jammu region

As fresh snowfall compounded miseries of common residents across Kashmir valley and parts of Jammu region in the last 24 hours all out efforts were made by the state government machinery to clear the snowbound roads on priority basis. To monitor the situation senior district authorities were put to task by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his political secretary Tanvir Sadiq.

His effort to create a sense of security among the isolated residents, however back fired as people started posting pictures in response exposing the tall claims made by the chief minister sitting away from the state. To cover up for his absence his political secretary Tanir Sadiq attended a meeting along with Divisional Commissioner Srinagar Shailendra Kumar.


In Jammu battery of senior govt officers including Principal secretary to Chief Minister BB Vyas chaired a meeting along with other  senior bureaucrats and took stock of the snow clearance operations. Ironiclaly, no serious effort was made to involve district authorities from snow bound areas of Jammu region to expedite snow clearing operations in their areas too. The entire effort was restricted to Kashmir division and here too when the people suffering miseries started posting pictures of accumulation of snow in their neighbourhood the state govt agencies vanished from the scene.

According to the spokesman of the state government, “all the Sectoral officers of the Kashmir division have been told to ensure snow clearance, restoration of power and water supply within the shortest possible time in view of the heavy snowfall experienced in the valley”.

The video conferencing was attended by the Principal Secretary, Home, Suresh Kumar,Principal Secretary, PDD,  A. K. Mehta, , Commissioner Secretary PHE, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Secretary Health, Gazanffar Hussain and other senior officers in the Civil Secretariat Jammu whereas in the Kashmir Division it was attended by the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr. Tanvir Sadiq, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Shalender Kumar , Chief Engineers of PDD, MED, R&B, and other senior officers of various departments.

Vyas while asking the officers to personally monitor the snow clearance, power restoration, water and other services, directed for control rooms and help lines already set up for the purpose to be proactive in all respects so that they are responsive to the public grievances and redress the same within the shortest possible time.

The meeting was briefed that snow clearance, power restoration efforts are being made by the field functionaries and the situation is being monitored very closely on regular basis.

The officers were directed to ensure availability of LPG and other essentials so that the people do not face any inconvenience. It was also impressed upon the officers to be responsive to the people’s needs viz–a-viz snow clearance, restoration of power, water, ration and other essentials.
