Cancer patients undergoing treatment in Regional Cancer Centre, Jammu these days develop cold feet at the mere mention of visiting the centre located on the ground floor of the Government Medical College(GMC) hospital.
For last couple of days the hospital authorities are carrying our repair /renovation work inside the centre but while doing so the hospital authorities have put to risk the lives of hapless patients.
Instead of adhering to the standard protocol of ensuring sterile environment, to avoid any infection at the time of administering chemotherapy to patients, the hospital authorities have been paying little attention to the safety norms and carrying out the procedure in shabby environment. The hardships of these patients are often compounded as some times even sewage water makes way inside the chemotherapy room.
Ignorant patients, coming from poor back grounds and those who cannot afford treatment at private centres outside the state, have little or no option but to suffer in silence.
Taking undue advantage of the patients profile the hospital authorities even ignored requests from their own faculty members to shift the OPD for the time being to some other floor till the time repair work was going on in the RCC.
Ironically, for past several days the patients have been raising the issue with the senior faculty members but instead of paying attention to their genuine pleas the faculty has been ignoring their requests and carrying out their activities in routine. The Head of the Department Prof Ashutosh Gupta was not present in the department as he was reportedly attending a seminar outside Jammu.
