More than 18 months ago on April 1, 2012 Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad came all the way from New Delhi to inaugurate Maharaja Hari Singh park on the Tawi river front and dedicated the same to the people of Jammu amid much fanfare.
Addressing the mammoth public rally the former chief minister had claimed that the park would soon be developed and made a tourist destination in the heart of Jammu city.
The Union health minister had also promised that the park would prove to be boon for morning walkers and would prove to be beneficial in all respects.
Ironically, over 18 months have passed after the grand ceremony but not a single stone has been added to the park. On the contrary the only foundation stone with names of Maharaja Hari Singh engraved has started falling apart.
Only street children and those playing cricket and other games can be spotted dusting their clothes as even the ground lacks grass. The open area of the park is often used by the rag pickers to approach the banks of river Tawi and spread litter in the park.
It is also used as parking space by drivers of private transport buses and official vehicles.Last week when Congress vice president visited Jammu and addressed a rally of Panches and sarpanches the public vehicles were parked in the Maharaja Hari Singh Park.
The local residents in the area feel cheated. “If we were promised a park in the heart of the city by the union minister who also remained a former chief minister why the state government and the department headed by the congress minister has failed to complete the necessary work in the park” a local resident in the area said.
The state congress unit leaders owning proximity to the PCC Chief Prof Saif Ud Din Soz said the event was hijacked by the Azad loyalists and now no one in the state government from the congress is bothered about the delay caused in completion of the park.
