Thousands of devotees from across the country thronged Katra, the base camp, for their onward pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. When School children waited for over 5 hours for VVIPs to formally inaugurate the Navratra festival in Katra

Dressed in colourful attire, faces decked up with contrasting make up, standing on their legs large number of children, hungry and thirsty, waited for almost five long hours  for the VVIPs including Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and Tourism Minister GA Mir to arrive in Katra to inaugurate the nine day long Navratra festival. On the invitation cards the organisers of the festival had mentioned 11.00 a.m as the time of inauguration but on saturday the chief guest and other dignitaries arrived well past 3.00 p.m to cut the customary ribbon before formally  inaugurating the festival. Amid escalating tensions along LoC, Pak Wrestlers not invited to play Kushti in Katra

The ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan has  led to the ouster of the Pakistan wrestling team from the famous wrestling competition held every year during the Navratra festival in Katra.  The President of the Indian Style Wrestling Association (J&K ) Shiv Kumar Sharma Thursday told reporters that in view of the tension along the LOC in J&K the association decided against inviting team from Pakistan to participate in the Kushti Maha Kumbh scheduled to begin on October 11 in Katra. The world’s highest rail bridge being built across Chenab riverbed in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir will take at least three more years to be functional. Railway officials say the bridge, which is five times higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar and far taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, will be completed by December 2017. The arched structure will connect Baramulla to Jammu via Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund with a travel time of six-and-a-half hours. Currently, it takes exactly double the time – 13 hours – to reach Jammu from Baramulla in northern Kashmir, which is 60km from Srinagar. 10 passengers killed, 15 injured in Reasi accident

At least 10 passengers were killed and fifteen others were injured when a minibus in which they were traveling rolled down in to a deep gorge in Reasi district late Friday evening. According to police the ill fated minibus was on its way from Arnas to Panasa when it met with an accident near Tatrakot in Panasa area of Reasi. Till last reports came in the rescue teams were struggling to shift the injured to a nearby district hospital in Reasi. The locals and army in the area rushed to the site of the accident. J&K Cabinet approves transfer of 500 kanals for establishment of University Campus

The Cabinet which met today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah accorded sanction to the transfer of State land measuring 500 kanals situated in village Jadh, Tehsil and District Reasi in favour of the University of Jammu for the establishment of a University Campus. The Cabinet also extended the period of submission of the report by the Cabinet Sub-Committee examining the creation of new administrative units by one month beyond 24th August, 2013. It is awful to see the garbage and polyethene spread all over the town and Rains have made the condition worse. Seeing the insensitive attitude of attitude Katra residents are asking “What is the Katra Municipal Committee doing ?” A fight for right to clean the city is needed here !
