On the 163rd birth day celebrations of Maharaja Pratap Singh at his birth place Reasi, Internationally acclaimed theatre and cultural personality Padamshree Awardee Balwant Thakur was felicitated for bringing pride to the people of Reasi by his winning of one of the highest civilian honour of the country ‘Padamshree’. The felicitation was done by the District Development Commissioner Reasi, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary IAS on behalf of the General Zorawar Singh memorial Committee at an exclusive function held at erstwhile Shahi Mahal (Present Court Complex, Reasi) and was attended by who is who of Reasi including the prominent members of Bar Association, Reasi.
Speaking on the occasion District Development Commissioner, Reasi Dr. Shahid Iqbal said that such commemorative functions are the opportune moments to educate the younger generations about the great past and the glorious history of the place. He assured to involve larger public in future particularly the children to commemorate such rarest occasions by recognizing meritorious public services and disseminating information about such great personalities.
Balwant Thakur who is a native of village Bakkal and had his early education in Reasi while expressing his gratitude to the people of Reasi said that the love and the blessings which he has been continuously receiving from them has been highly instrumental and always inspired him to achieve something outstandingly well for his homeland.
Sharing his concerns Balwant Thakur said that all out efforts are required to be made to preserve the fast fading and decaying cultural identities. Younger generations as a fashion are being encouraged to leave their inherited language and culture, which is a very dangerous trend. Communities without their own language and culture are ought to lose their basic identity and will be known and recognized as rootless creatures.
It’s the high time that we start valuing and respecting our roots, past and the very being. Referring to his vast experience of travelling globally and interacting with top intellectuals of the world, Balwant Thakur said that he feels very sad about his own people for not being aware about the damage they are doing to ruin their priceless cultural treasure and heritage. He assured the gathering that through his innovative initiatives he will make aware the general masses and about this ignorance of theirs and will make it a point that this becomes a public movement.
