Udhampur city which is known for its scenic beauty, is no more a city of beautiful landscape. It resembles more like an open garbage pail these days. Huge heaps of garbage can be seen all across the town.
After the orders of local administration last month not to dump the waste near Darsu nallah as it had caused damage to the railway tunnel on Udhampur–Jammu rail section, Udhampur Municipal Council (UMC) has no place to dump the city waste.
On Thursday, administration was able to persuade the Sarpanch of area for temporary dumping of the solid waste in Darsu area for some days, as stated by EO of Municipal Council while calming down the protestors protesting against them on Friday. But as soon as the protestors came to know about it, they started shouting slogans against the Sarpanch and made trucks carrying waste to go back from there.
The bigger question arises here is that if one doesn’t like to see such waste in front of their houses or locality why would these villagers allow someone to dump the city waste in their village. Why not for once and all, resolve the matter, instead of looking for temporary resolution.
Its been now more than 1 and half months, the local administration is not able to resolve the issue yet. Administration had tried to dump the garbage in some nearby villages but wherever they go they have to face the ire of locals.
The heaps of garbage are getting bigger and bigger day by day. These heaps are now emitting foul smell and thus making the lives of locals difficult. The situation is getting murkier day by day.
At present the waste is dumped along the road side near DC office, Adarsh Colony, Hospital Road, Near CMO office and many more such busy streets in the town.
The most shocking part is that the safai karamcharis are burrning this trash which in result causing serious air pollution and health risks.
On one side, the local administration is making people aware about Malaria and Dengue and on other side, they are not showing any serious concern towards solving this problem. Don’t know whether they are waiting for some outbreak or what.
